World War Hulk Impressions

[11.16.07]
We get it, the Hulk is really powerful, and so are his enemies, but couldn’t the fights have been more interesting then just “BOOM!”, “THWACK!” and “SMASH!”?

So I just finished World War Hulk, and I honestly don’t know how I feel about it. I had really high expectations for the series, especially after the magnificent Planet Hulk, but World War Hulk just felt… rushed and hastily thrown together. At times, it seemed really promising, but all of the fights were way over the top, and not in the Stalone-y good way. We get it, the Hulk is really powerful, and so are his enemies, but couldn’t the fights have been more interesting then just “BOOM!”, “THWACK!” and “SMASH!”?

Now some random thoughts about the series. By the way, SPOILERS!, so don’t read on if you haven’t finished WWH:

+ I don’t like the Sentry. Not one bit. I know he has the power of a million exploding suns but is crippled by his agoraphobia (The writers wouldn’t let us forget this fact. They only reminded us a thousand times throughout WWH…), but he’s just a lame character.

+ WWH made me hate Iron Man even more now. I really can’t stand Tony Stark, and it’s a shame because the Iron Man movie looks sooo good.

+ I think everyone could see the Miek betrayal thing coming from a mile away. While it was obvious what was going to happen, it seemed really out of character for the Meek we all knew and loved from Planet Hulk. Oh, and the thought of Miek and the Brood getting it on gives me the heebee jeebees.

+ Skaar? The son of Hulk? Could be good… but at the same time, there’s a 50/50 chance that it’ll be horrible.

+ I miss Captain America. I never realized just how much of a “moral anchor” he played in the Marvel Universe, but you could tell that things wouldn’t have played out like they did if he was there. I know I’m talking about comic book characters as if they were real… but any Marvel fan would agree with me.

+ I just read the main WWH books, so I missed out on all the side-stories. I hope there wasn’t anything essential in the tie-in books.

+ This was a good read. I really liked this quote about Skaar:

Skaar: Son of Hulk takes the classic Hulk question of what makes a man a monster or a hero and cranks it to eleven.

Why doesn’t Pak just make ten the top number and make it more of a question of what makes a man a monster or a hero?

For all the hype about it, WWH was a real let down. Nothing important happened and it was just flashy for teenagers. Civil War was way better.
