Wonder Girls: Irony
Even though I’ve made fun of a lot of old kpop videos here on popho and on kontona, I gotta admit there’s a part of me that yearns for the days when I would spend hours trolling the #finkses irc chatrooms and the soompi message boards hoping to get my hands on a new SES or Baby VOX video. I realized then and now that it was a pretty sad existence. While I am glad that that phase of my life is over, I fear that I am once again getting sucked into the seedy world of Korean girl groups, and I place the blame entirely on the Wonder Girls.
Serious, ever since I saw the Wonder Girl’s video for Tell Me, I’ve been hooked. I like their ugly ass outfits, their horrible singing voices. Hell, I even like the stupid fucking dance they do for Tell Me even though it’s fucking gay as hell.
On deck for today is a video review of the Wonder Girls’ Irony video. I usually like to review videos I haven’t seen before, but it’s been a while since I’ve seen this one, so maybe I’ll notice some things that I didn’t notice the first 324324 times I watched this video…
0:06 - I always liked the look of this video. Bright and colorful.

0:15 - I wish I would have reviewed this video before I did Tell Me. Usually, in an Asian group’s first video, you’ll get a quick run down of all of the members. Would have helped immensely.
At any rate, here’s Hyun A. Apparently she’s no longer with the group because of chronic gastroenteritis. Oh wellz.

0:17 - Sun Mi. Oooo. Me likey.
Wait. I remember reading their wikipedia entry a while back and recall 2 out of the 5 girls being like 15 while the others were 18+. Let me check to make sure…
Fuck. Great. Not even 20 seconds into the video and I’m already making pederast comments.

0:19 - Okay another youngin’ but I think So Hee is probably my favorite one of the bunch. She was dressed up as Wonder Woman in Tell Me and she seems to have the best personality out of the 5.
Yeah, I can’t believe I’m rating personalties of teenagers based on what they do in videos either.

0:22 - Cheer up emo kid.

0:29 - Something has happend to the chick that looks like Shin Hyun Jun and all the girls are curious.
0:42 - I wish I understood what they were saying, because it looks like trouble.

0:50 - I never understood the point of these scenes in music videos. Who gives a shit about future technology or whatever. (Unless it’s a cellphone.)

0:59 - Video game controller?

1:14 - Yes that guy!
1:20 - These girls sure do possess a lot of fancy gadgets.

1:36 - Okay, so apparently “that guy” is some kind of scum bag so the girls send their bulldog after him. Also, the bulldog appears to be the Terminator.
1:53 - WTF?! Voo doo doll?
I must not have watched this video very closely because I don’t remember any of this shit. I do have to say that I remember not being very impressed with this video and it wasn’t until Tell Me that I started paying attention to these girls.
2:00 - There’s some pretty hot stripper-esque dancing going on at this point in the video. If you don’t watch anything else, skip to this part. Trust me.
2:22 - Whole lot of voo dooing going on. The Wonder Girls are salting this guy’s game big time.

2:31 - HOT PANTS!
3:12 - God dammit fucking rap segment. I guess it’s inevitable because every single Korean pop video ever has to have a rap.
3:17 - Okay our girls have gotten all dressed up in their whore outfits and are about to go out on the town.

4:17 - Our hero tries to win back the affection of one of the Wonder Girls, but she ain’t hearing that.
YO GO GIRL!
…
Sorry. I got carried away.

4:28 - Holy shit. One of the girls just blew this guy.
No seriously. She blew on him and he’s just flying backwards and shit. Oh crazy world of Korean pop music videos. How I love you!
Verdict: I liked it. While it doesn’t come close to matching the greatness that is Tell Me, Irondy wasn’t a bad first video. There’s a coherent storyline, the video was bright and colorful, some great dancing, and the girls were too cute. I can’t wait until their next video, apparently for Some Like It Hot, is out.
