The OC: Series Finale
|
The series finale to my favorite television show. I promised myself I wouldn’t cry… |
I’m sitting here still in shock, in disbelief, in denial, that the OC is finally over. For those of you that don’t know, the OC is my favorite television show and ever since I found out it was coming to an end I’ve been feeling kind of numb. I mean, I made a huge emotional investment in this show… I’ve been watching since the first episode and it even became a weekly ritual for my friends and I to get together to watch it. (not gay) At times, the OC is cheap, cheesy, and had plots and storylines straight out of daytime soap operas… but you know what, it was still fun to watch.
I believe years from now the OC will attain a huge and loyal cult status (kinda like Star Trek) and new spinoff television shows and movies will be made. Okay most likely not, but that won’t stop me from writing my Seth/Ryan slash fanfiction.

I know that there are quite a few people out there that didn’t enjoy the series finale, but I thought it was very well done. The episode opened up with all of the major characters living in one house. The Cohen family then returns home to find out that there house is done for and will now have to find a new home. End of an era. It’s a story within a story people! Shakespeare’s Macbeth doesn’t do it this well. The Cohens end up relocating to Berkley, but a ton of shit happens in between including a broken up wedding and Pancakes giving birth to a bunch of bunnies, one of whom is named Flapjacks.

Oh Taylor Townsend. She completely turned this show around. I’m glad she was given a major role after Marissa bit the dust, because lets face it, Marissa sucked. More on that later.
But yeah, Taylor inserted a vitality in the OC that had been missing for a while. She was so over the top and you did not know what to expect out of her. I mean, shit like this:

How is that not fucking gold?! I felt a majority of the characters became to serious for their own good and it was fun to have one who could serve as a punchline without being retarded.

And then there’s Kaitlin Cooper. America loves hot white jailbait ass. From the end of last season and the beginning of this one, it seemed that Kaitlin was destined to be a skanky, conniving hoebag, but she turned out to be not so much. She shared a lot of similar traits with her sister, trying to get the attention of her mother by pissing her off, but she wasn’t as annoying. There was no telling what Kaitlin would be like if they show continued.
Oh and was any one else annoyed the fucking stupid ice cream guy storyline last week? Why are they wasting valuable screentime on an irrelevant character? Don’t they know that there were only 2 episodes left? Ugh!

The Bullet and his son’s were fucking hilarious. Also having a Hanoi Bullet was money. I really think Fox should make a show about the Bullet Bros. How could you not watch a show based on a bunch of Texas cowboy half-brothers with one Vietnamese half-brother thrown in for good measure?

In my opinion, the reason why the OC ended was not because it was getting slaughtered in the ratings by Grey’s Anatomy or that it had simply run its course, but it was Marissa Cooper. (Actually it probably is because of the first two reasons, but I still like to blame Marissa anyway.) Was there a more unlikeable character on the show? Sure people hated Julie Cooper Nichols McNamara Troy Bullet, but she was the kind of character you loved to hate. The same goes for the other despicable characters on the OC.
However Marissa just plain sucked. After the first half of season 1 she did nothing but bring down the OC. Plus her taste in men were awful. Oliver? Luke? Trey? Volchuck or whatever his name was? The only sad part about her dying and leaving the show was that it didn’t happen at the end of season 2.

I enjoyed the two guys who sold the Cohen’s old house back to the Cohens. The midwife/wedding planner jokes were fucking solid. That’s all I have to say about that.

At the very end of the episode, we’re treated to a montage of where everyone ends up. I was dreading this part of the episode the most, since you knew it was coming, but it was done very well. Julie graduates from college and it appears that Hercules decided to stick around and help raise his kid, Seth and Summer get married and we can even see Sandy and Kirsten’s daughter all grown up, and Ryan ends up going to Berkley and becoming an architect or contractor or something. He notices a kid in a similar situation as he in the very first episode and Ryan asks him if he needed help. The circle begins anew.
I’m really sad that the OC is over, but I thought that the finale was very well done. It moved at a brisk pace and contained a lot of in jokes that rewarded long time watchers of the show. I’m also glad that we got a glimpse at what happens the characters that I have dedicated the past four years of my life to, because I would have been just an empty shell if Seth and Summer didn’t end up getting married.
Okay I’m going to go put my testicles back on now. But for old time’s sake…
California… CALIFOOOOOOOOORNNNNIAAAAAAAAA… Here we cooooOOooooome!
