Red Star: V1I1

[03.08.07]
Science Fiction + Magic + Mother Russia = One Spiffy Comic Book

Lately I’ve been turning into a lot of my past pursuits to help me deal with the harsh pain of reality. This explains why I’ve written approximately 30 articles on video games nobody cares about and Korean pop singers whose current status could be compared to the Spice Girls or Da Brat. I realize that this is a sad sad state of affairs, but when someone tells you that the light is gone from your eyes, you really don’t have much to live for.

Boo hoo hoo…

In addition to getting addicted to the Death Note anime, I’ve also started to read comic books again. Someone recommended that I check out Red Star and I decided to give it a shot.

The premise is interesting. I’m too lazy to go google anything about it, but from what I am able to gather; the United Republics of the Red Star is one of the most powerful nations on earth. The Red Star world blends a mixture of magic and technology (that combo always manages to give me a hard on). How did they get so powerful and why? I’d like to know the answer to these things.

We follow Maya, a widow and a sorcerer, as she recounts the tail of her husband, Marcus Anteres, in his last battle(?). The character design is superb… but I found the art in general a little lacking. Imagine a really nice couch in an empty room. Yeah, that’s how the art in Red Star feels. The plot didn’t get fully developed, but that’s understandable since it’s only one issue and we probably won’t know what the hell is going on really until issue 5. Issue 1 felt extremely short, probably due to the fact that there was a higher ratio of 2 page splash panels to pages than a Jim Lee comic.

Hopefully in issue 2 things will get fleshed out more and more details are given about “the Red Star universe.” While it’s still way to early to tell if the story will amount to anything, after reading issue 1, I am genuinely intrigued by the setup of Red Star and can’t wait to see more.
