I finished watching the first season of Heroes this weekend. Yup, all 23 episodes in one weekend… and I absolutely loved it. I had heard the hype surrounding Heroes, and my roommates watch the show every week that it came on, so it was extremely hard to hold off on the show. (I wanted to watch the entire series at one time so I wouldn’t get pissed like I did with Lost.)

Heroes borrows heavily from some comic books (X-Men and Watchmen come to mind) without ripping off anything too much. Plus, with comic book/super hero movies being all the rage these days, I guess it’s the perfect time for a super hero show. Some random thoughts about season 1:

+ Hiro is the fucking man. One of the hardest things about not watching Heroes when it aired was hearing people geek out on the forums and blogs that I visit gushing about the guy. Totally likable character. Even his buddy with the blond hair, blue eye fetish was awesome.

+ After seeing George Takei being super gay it was hard to take him seriously as a bad ass Japanese conglomerate CEO.

+ I like the diversity in the show. True, Heroes overplays some stereotypes, but for the most part it works. I think there are more minorities in one episode of Heroes than the entire Friends series. In fact, I’m pretty positive that this is the case.

+ I hate the Nissan Versa and no amount of product placement will get me to buy one. Also, it appears that Sony’s pushing the PS3 in Heroes. I might buy one of those.

+ Hayden Panettiere was the little girl in Remember the Titans. That’s all I have to say about that.

+ I’m glad Stan Lee was just a bus driver.

+ I also really like how “realisic” the first season was. I’m glad that they didn’t have the characters start going by stupid nicknames and wearing shitty neon costumes.

+ The pacing of the show was also really great. My perspective might be a little skewed since I watched the entire thing in one weekend, but questions were answered and mysteries were revealed in a way that didn’t make me want to hate the show like Lost. (Okay, that’s the second time I mentioned Lost, but I used to really really like the show until it starting being a cocktease. Things do look on the up and up for next season though. Last time I’ll mention Lost I promise.)

+ D.L. and Parkman were wastes of space. They took up valuable screen time that could have been used on Bennett or the Petrelli brothers. I’m also sad to see that Linderman died. Or did he? Seems like he’s a super interesting character and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few episodes next season focused on the past.

+ When will the Haitian actually get a name?

+ Is it just me, or did the shrink interviewing Niki a dead ringer for Oprah Winfrey? Also, did the girl who played Eden look like Rachel Bilson when she had long hair? There were a couple of other people who could have been bootlegs of more famous people that don’t come to mind right now in Heroes as well. Am I the only one that noticed them?

+ I am a huge dork for watching about ~17 hours of television in one weekend. I need help.

There are a whole series of comics on the Official Heroes website, and they seem to be pretty decent. Maybe I’ll go through and read all of them in one sitting. At this point, I’m debating whether or not I’m going to hold off on watching the second season until I can get all the episodes at once… or if I’ll be keeping up with it on a week by week basis. I’ll probably do the former because I am really hooked on the show now.

Possibly my Heroes addiction subconsciously lead to my purchase of my Versa, but it could also be all the bad ass features in it. Don’t hate on the Versa, it’s wicked.

I think cuz u watched it all in once u didn’t get the family feel that DL and Parkman provide. They were essential and each week they provided new threads of thought on who they were and how they should be involved in the whole Heroes-verse. Not one character was a waste except maybe The Bennett son.

I didn’t feel that DL got too much screentime, but I do agree that his character was a waste in the sense that he could’ve been used better. I kept waiting to see him spank Micah for stealing that money from the ATM, but it never happened. :(

Parkman, on the other hand, got way too much screentime for the minor character that he should have been. That actor gets too many roles period. Anyone else would have been benched after “Felicity”, but because he’s BFFs with J.J. Abrams he still has a career. Ugh.

And the Haitian totally needs a name — which is why those of us in my tiny online circle have taken to calling him “Moe”. I have no idea why I chose that name, but there you have it.

I miss Eden.

How do they even know he’s Haitian? I mean, he approaches the most random and complete strangers to screw up their powers and then, later, they can recall he was HAITIAN. It is b/c it’s more P.C. than identifying him as “the black man”??
