Ninja Scroll Villains

[03.21.07]
A repost about the villains of Ninja Scroll.

Ninja Scroll Villains

For some reason or another, people falsely assume that I’m really into anime. I mean, I do enjoy watching some occasionally, but I’m not reallly into it that much. Usually when fanboys ask me about the subject, I say “Pokemon Rules!” or “Sailormoon should get rid of all the other Sailor Scouts; they are really holding her back.” This is usually enough for them to never talk to me again.

It’s not my fault that I am not into it though. I mean, sometimes I wish I was moreso. Then I could dress up cosplay style and not feel like an idiot. I place the blame all on one movie, Ninja Scroll.

Now it’s not because Ninja Scroll is really bad or because I don’t like ninjas (I love ninjas, even with my pee pee), but rather it’s due to the fact that Ninja Scroll is one of the finest pieces of cinema I ever seen, animated or not. I expected every other anime I watched to be just as good, but few can compare.

The simple plot isn’t going to win any awards, but it’s the execution of it that makes it so damn good. Throw in some of the most fucked up characters ever imagined by the human mind and you are going to get a masterpiece.

With all that being said, what better topic to talk about this anime classic than to take a look at some of villains that were in this movie. Just a little warning before you start reading though. I’ve been watching a Growing Pains marathon, so excuse me if I get some stuff mixed up…

Tessai

Tessai is the first of the Devils of Kamon (sp?) that Jubei faced, and probably the toughest. He had the ability to become near invincible by transforming his skin into rock. Tessai also weilded a double-sided boomerang sword, which he used in quite possibly one of the bloodiest anime scenes outside of Fist of the North Star.

He literally took out a whole ninja team single handedly with it, and even got some poontang afterwards. This prooved to be his downfall however, because Kagero, the main female lead, has one of the nastiest cases of STDs ever known to man; she poisons whoever tries to get it on with her and they die immediately.

Yurimaru

This guy was also one of my favorites. While being able to create dental floss like wires at will may not seem like a cool ability, Yurimaru took full advantage of his power and did some amazing stuff with it. For instance, he managed to trick two girls into going out on a date with at the same time, at the same restaurant! Oh wait, that’s Mike Seaver. My bad.

Yurimaru was also one of Gemma’s, the head of the Devils of Kamon, lovers. I suppose this can be said to be his undoing, because Gemma was basically boning everybody in the group and Yurimaru is ultra possessive. He gets killed by Zakuro near the end.

Benisato

Now Benisato was probably the nastiest of the bunch, which is saying alot. When she wasn’t busy having snakes come out of her vagina, she could control them, and she could also shed her skin like a snake. She was done in by Yurimaru for failing to kill Jubei, but everybody knows it’s because Yurimaru couldn’t handle having Gemma also taking her as a lover.

Mujuro

I was kinda miffed that Mujuro didn’t get a bigger part in Ninja Scroll, because he seemed like he would have been the coolest of the Devils. Mujuro was blind, but this didn’t stop him from being a bad ass with the sword. I gotta also give props to him for not being a prophet or wizard or something like that, because that’s the route most blind people in anime movies seem to take.

Mushizo

Mushizo had to be “the Carol” of the crew. I mean, come on, the guy had a hornet’s nest in his back. Would you want to hang out with a guy like that? I can imagine the other Devils sitting around deciding on whether to call Mushizo to come hang out with them, but then deciding it would be better not too.

But despite all of that, Mushizo was pretty powerful. He nearly killed Jubei, but was himself killed when he fell into a river and the bees tore through his body trying to escape. That’s irony. Kinda like the time Ben tried to make a movie about exploiting women.

Shijima

Shijima had to be my favorite character in the whole movie. I mean, what is there not to like about the guy. He’s dark and gloomy, can melt into the shadows, make illusionary copies of himself, and he has a big claw. He’s just the total package. Also around the time I first saw Ninja Scroll, I was a Manson fan, and Shijima kinda reminded me of him in a way.

Zakuro

Uh… Zakuro could make alot of gunpowder and blow stuff up. That’s about it really.

Gemma

The bisexual leader of the Devils and all around tough guy, Gemma was a force to be reckoned with. He was beheaded by Jubei in the past, but Gemma discovered the power of reincarnation and was able to come back, only to get killed once more.

One of my favorite scenes in the entire movie was the last fight, when Jubei was head-butting Gemma’s face and it was getting all mushed. You just have to watch this scene to see how incredibly gory, yet strangely satisfying, it was. Gemma ended up dying by being coated with liquid gold and sinking to the bottom of the sea.

So there it is, a quick overview of the villains. If you haven’t seen Ninja Scroll, I highly recommend that you try to pick up a copy as soon as you can, even though I probably semi-ruined it in this spoiler filled review. I still think that the majority of you guys will enjoy it if you haven’t seen it, and if you have, then you know what I’m talking about.
