Knytt

[03.01.07]
Anybody know what the Knytt is? Is he like a monkey Goku or some other kind of fucked up alien?

I’ve been on a video game kick as of late (you can probably tell by the number of video game related posts I’ve been making lately…). Of course, since my employers prefer to pay me in macadamia nuts instead of actual money, my gaming budget is ultra tight and I really can’t afford to buy anything except for maybe Sprung which Best Buy has on “sale” for $3 (I use the term “sale” loosely, because even then Sprung is not worth it.).

Luckily I came across Knytt. From the site:

The Knytt was abducted by an alien! Traveling through space, the UFO flies into a meteor and crashes on a nearby planet. Luckily, the Knytt and the alien survive, but the UFO is a wreck. How can the Knytt possibly find its way back home again?

Knytt is a free platform game for Windows featuring exploration and atmosphere.

Knytt is a simple game, but there’s beauty in its simplicity. Someone else could have written that last sentence a lot better than I did, but you guys will have to bear with me. There’s not a whole lot going on graphics wise save for some simple pixels. The music is sparse, and sound effects few. The only actions Knytt can perform are jumping and climbing walls.

And even with only that, Knytt is still great. It only took me a couple of hours to finish, but even now I am going back to explore the world. In order to get back to his home planet, the Knytt has to gather parts for the wrecked UFO. Gameplay is very similar to Shadow of the Colossus; the next UFO part location is pointed out by a ray of light. Getting to the part is easier said than done though because while you’ll know the general direction more often than night you’ll have to make detours to get there.

I guess it’s that part of the post where I try to hastily sum up everything in a few poorly written sentences. Well, I’m going to go ahead and recommend that you try Knytt out since it’s free and AWESOME. It really is a great game and the screens don’t do it justice.

But you don’t have to take my word for it.

Score: 8.5

P.S. The guy behind the game, Nicklas Nygren, also has a few of other games he’s made on his site. Supposedly they’re pretty good too.
