In the past, I was more familiar with image galleries of Jolin Tsai than her music, and who can blame me? I think she’s a knockout. In addition to being supercute, she also seems to be really smart.

Despite the fact that I’ve covered a lot of Asian music videos on popho and konton, I really haven’t done a good job of exploring the Chinese music scene. Some of the videos are just as good (bad?) as those from Japan or Korea, but, for some reason, I’ve never been able to get my hands on a lot of them. And when I was finally able to obtain a lot of Mandarin and Cantopop, I had pretty much given up on reviewing videos since 99% of what I type up is just recycled has anyway. Serious. I think I just put up new pictures in this post and used text from an old Baby Vox post.

Jolin was an introverted and shy child. Knowing that Jolin was of scholarly material, her mother brought her to attend Japanese-style Mathematics lessons, and she completed the course more quickly than expected. In addition, she never failed to get into the top 3 positions of her class during her primary school years, other than once when she placed at the tenth position. As a result, she was caned by her mother for being too complacent in her test preparation. True enough, her scholarly material brought her to the top-ranked schools in Taiwan, such as Jingmei Girls High School, and Fu-Jen Catholic University. The latter is well known for its English and English Literature courses, which Jolin majored in.

She self-studied English during her primary school years. Her interests in English are reflected when she chose to do English Literature in Fun-Jen Catholic University, a Taiwanese University popular for its English culture and foundation. She also developed an interest towards singing, as she experimented with different vocal singing techniques after listening to various popular female singers such as Teresa Teng and Faye Wong.

Since music videos about lips are peaking in popularity at the moment, I decided to give Jolin’s Attraction of Sexy Lips a write up. I’m sure the original title for the song sounds a lot better than the mangled fob English that is “attraction of sexy lips”, even though I can’t be sure. There are only like 3 English words in the entire song. It’s important to note that one of them is “juicy.”

I think I just figured out something. You know why my Asian pop video reviews always sound alike? Because 99% of them feature the same concepts over and over. Bright colors, cute dancing girls, and maybe a German sportscar. I just went through my “music video” folder and this holds up. I’m serious. Also, shiny clothes and maybe some hip hop influences like a guy with his pants around his ankles and some really bad dancing. If it’s a Korean video 9 times out of 10 you’re going to see someone talk on a cellphone while plugging it. If you’re a fan of Jpop/Kpop/Cpop/Cornpops, go ahead and look at videos from the past couple of years and you’ll see what I’m talking about. No wonder I lost interest in Asian music vids.

But yeah, while there’s nothing new or special in this video, what it does it does well. Jolin Tsai is banging and some of her backup dancers are too. Someone should tell them that the jeans that they’re wearing are really ugly though. They look like they were designed by Tetsuya Nomura.

This is the first Jolin Tsai video I’ve ever watched and it probably won’t be my last. Jolin has a lot of that “mmmph” that seems to be missing in a lot of new artists and there seems to be a million videos of her all over youtube. Perhaps I could find one with a little bit more substance to review. Attraction of Sexy Lips is not a bad video per se, it’s just that it brings nothing new to the table and is kind of stale.
