Ivy: Sonata of Temptation
|
Despite combining two of my favorite things, hot women and Final Fantasy, this video is subpar. |

I’m always excited when I get a new Ivy video. Either we’re treated with incredible tales of skankiness or some hot action that causes the Korean moral police to go crazier than that one time Hyori simulated oral sex on a dancer. I mean, to this very day, I think A Ha is quite possibly the hottest Korean pop video ever made.
Seriouly, when most Kpop stars try to act “sexy”, they just end up looking extremely awkward. The short list of girls who can act sexy includes Chae Yeon, Kim EZ, Hyori, and Ivy. (There could be more since I haven’t really been following kpop for the past couple of years…)

So when jkah sent me a link to this video saying that Ivy “reenacts” a scene from Advent Children, I was somewhat pumped to see it. Unfortunately Sonata of Temptation just ends up leaving a bad taste in my mouth, kind of like all of those men that Ivy has been with in the past.
Ivy assumes the role of a less bustier Tifa in this video and fights some guy in Aeris’s church. If you’ve seen Advent Children, it’s almost impossible to not immediately see the similarities. And even if you miss that, there’s a disclaimer that reads “The action scenes in this film is a recreation of FINAL FANTASY ADVENT CHILDREN.” I don’t know if this video has tie-ins with the the movie or if it is just paying homage or if Ivy needs to hire a new director because this one is pretty shitty.
By the way, someone sent me an email saying that I use a lot of wishy washy language on popho. Sorry guys, it’s my legal training. I like to leave some wiggle room for when I will inevitably contradict myself at a later point in time. It’s all a part of being a huge hypocrite.
Also, Sonata of Temptation “borrows” from Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata Fur Elise (thanks anonymous!) (which might explain why there’s also a “sonata” in the title of this song). Man, can’t Ivy get an original idea? Beethoven and Final Fantasy in the same video? She should just put on those really short white shorts from the A Ha video and a tank top and dance around fro 5 minutes. I bet that would generate way more interest than this video did and plus they’d save a ton of money.

If it wasn’t obvious, I really didn’t like this video. The song was somewhat annoying and the villain in the video looked like he should be serving me bubble tea. In fact, I swear that he works over at the Sweet Cafe. I’ll ask next time I’m there.
Score: 2.5
Thanks to jkah for the video!

From Japan Probe:
According to the JoongAng Daily, a South Korean court ruled on April 6th that the music video for pop singer Ivy’s “Temptation of Sonata” had illegally copied a scene from Japanese game company Square-Enix’s “Final Fantasy VII.”
The court ordered that the video be banned from airing on television. However, copies remain on sites like YouTube, where diehard Ivy fans and angry commenters are engaging in insult-slinging battles as this is being posted…
Ba hahahah.
