I <3 Winmugen
|
Every 2D fighter fans wet dream come true. |
Despite the fact that I’m at the office for 12 hours a day, I somehow manage to sneak in a few of hours of video gaming and watching television a night. Actually make that more than a few. Instead of socializing with other human beings or going to sleep, I prefer to spend my free time being a big fat nerd… but hey, I’ve been doing it for so long, so why change now?
One thing that I recently rediscovered was an old copy of mugen. Or winmugen actually. I think winmugen is an unsupported hack of mugen and most hardcore mugen fanatics look down on you if you use winmugen… but I really don’t care what the mugen fanatics think because the closest any of them will ever get to a touching breasts is if they drop a dorito down their shirts.

For those of you that don’t know, from wikipedia:
M.U.G.E.N is a 2D fighting game engine designed by Elecbyte and originally released in July 17, 1999. Elecbyte distributed beta versions that ran under DOS, Linux, and Windows. The engine allows for anyone to create characters, stages and other game objects through interpreted text files and graphics and sound compilations. It also supports various types of audio formats such as MP3, ADX, OGG and MIDI as background music during gameplay. The engine allows for the type of functionality found in most any commercial 2D fighting game, up to and including recreation of those games’ characters and gameplay.

Despite the fact that winmugen is illegal, I still can’t get enough of it. I guess it’s the bad boy side of me that gets off on breaking the law. Also, most of the character, stage, and music files are copyrighted materials, so you won’t find any of those here on this site. (A quick trip to google should yield some results.) Come to think of it, this entire post was probably a bad idea…
But whatever. In addition to being a bad boy, I like to live on the edge.
The ability to pit any character versus any character makes mugen something every fan of 2D fighters should try. I was really enjoying the Ryu/Sol matches I had going. I also liked using Bridget from Guilty Gears versus everyone. Man that Bridget is sooo cute. I would love hit that. I know she’s not real or whatever, but that doesn’t stop me from printing out her pictures and pasting them all over my wall.

In addition to setting up dream matches, you also have the ability to set up matches like in those nifty “versus” games and crazy slugfests with 4 characters on screen at the same time. Let me tell you, you haven’t lived until you have 4 Vanessa’s all dash punching at the same time.
At any rate, I’m not linking any files from the site, but google is your friend if you want to get into it. Mugen takes a little tinkering to get it working right, but once you do it’ll be more than worth it.
Now excuse me while I go set up my Mortal Kombat/Eternal Champions dreambout.
