Freak Nasty: Da Dip
|
To kick off popho becoming the Official Unofficial Freak nasty Website, I thought I’d do a quick run down of Freak Nasty’s biggest hit, Da’ Dip. |
In the past couple of weeks, I’ve been thinking about the direction popho is going to go in. Is it going to become an e/n site? (A form of website that is nearly extinct.) An Asian pop shrine? (I don’t know enough about it to make much of a website.) Or a gallery of my favorite import models? (Maybe…)
Well all three would have been decent choices, but there was an obvious contender that I had overlooked:
Seriously, go ahead and try to find anything on the internet about Freak Nasty. It can’t be done. So to kick off popho becoming the Official Unofficial Freak nasty Website, I thought I’d do a quick run down of Freak Nasty’s biggest hit, Da’ Dip.
0:12 - Right off the bat, I noticed that this wasn’t the original video for Da’ Dip. It was probably made more “MTV friendly” when Freak Nasty realized that this song was going to be huge.
I realized I didn’t know that much about the man behind the song. Here’s his possibly inaccurate wikipedia entry:
Stephen “Coach B” Burnett, aka Freak Nasty, aka RenatO (born New Orleans, Louisiana) is a former untalented hip-hop music recording artist. He currently resides in Alameda, California and is a member of the Alameda high school faculty. He is also currently the JV womens basketball coach. He is best known for the 1997 success of his single “Da’ Dip”.
Wow. I think that’s the harshness wikipedia entry that I have ever seen. Who was Freak Nasty’s rival?! I wonder if like Kilo or somebody and him had a feud back in the day and it’s still carrying over onto wikipedia entries.
Also, Freak Nasty sold 5 million records and is now a JV womens basketball coach. Why didn’t VH1 Behind the Music do a story on this guy?! I couldn’t imagine a more tragic downfall. One moment this guy is performing at MTV Spring Break 1997… the next he’s yelling at a bunch of girls who couldn’t make the varsity cut. Poor guy.
Oh, and here’s a picture of Freak Nasty:

He looks like he’s about to doze off or eat a hamburger or something.

0:14 - Ugh! Here’s the silver robot looking thing doing Da Dip. I remember seeing the video for the first time and thinking it was the corniest thing ever.
And what is Da Dip exactly? Is it just stylized dry humping? Anyone know anymore about this?
0:24 - Okay I think I get what Da Dip is. I’m just imagine somebody touching someone’s hip and then flapping their arms like a bird while squatting. Just imagine if you were pantomiming a bird and laying an egg. That’s how you do Da Dip.

0:35 - Asians love Da Dip. We sure do.
0:42 - There’s a whole lot of camera zooming into crotches in this video.

0:50 - Grunge loves Da Dip.
0:55 - It’s a shame Freak Nasty doesn’t appear at all in this video except for cut scenes from the older, cruder version. Judging by his appearance though, this is probably the only kind of “dip” Freak Nasty enjoys:

Am I right? Or am I right?
1:07 - I think a point that the director of this video that people were learning how to do Da Dip by looking into View Masters and watching the robot. That makes sense. Sorta.
1:26 - MJ sample. AWESOME.
1:37 - I wish there were more hot girls in this video. Seriously, rap videos from the late 90s always have a lot of hot scantily clad women…

2:04 - Doesn’t this guy have his own anime series?
2:06 - Alright y’all. If you ain’t dippin’, you must be trippin’.
2:18 - Jesus fucking Christ will this video ever end? It’s fucking horrible. Fucking fuck fuck.
2:34 - Freak Nasty seems to really want to lick women all over the place. Even the doo doo hole.
2:59 - Freak Nasty is a really really horrible rapper. It’s like he’s reading cue cards or something.

3:31 - Princess Leia loves Da Dip.
3:55 - At the end of the video the silver robot somehow manages to get free and starts dipping all over the place.
Verdict: That sucked. No really, I’ve watched some shitty videos before, and I just got to say that this is probably the one of the worst videos of all time. It’s only saving grace is the song… and that only gets points because of the nostalgia factor. I hated it so much that I thought about quitting my job, moving to California, and becoming a JV women’s basketball coach just so I could have the opportunity to beat this guy.
I take back everything I said about making popho the Official Unofficial Freak Nasty Website. I don’t want this place associate with this atrocity in any way… except for this post of course.
