Civil War 7

[02.25.07]
What’s so civil about war anyway?

So after being pushed back repeatedly and going through some problems, the final issue of Civil War was released. When the whole storyline started, it seemed as if Civil War was going to be one of the biggest and best crossover events in Marvel history. But after reading issue 7 I was severely let down.

I realize that the events of Civil War will have a lasting affect on the Marvel Universe… it’s just that the main Civil War books went from “good” to “really fucking good” to “OHMYGOD I can’t believe I stuck around for this shit.” As a casual reader, I don’t feel like buying 5 issues of Iron Man or Avengers East Coast Cat Raiders to see the whole story, so my view of Civil War is probably skewed. I’m sure avid comic book fans will probably look at this in a better light than I have.

I guess it is kind of cool that the events in Civil War actually mattered, and everything wasn’t going to be automagically fixed like in almost every other crossover event. Like I said earlier, I was just reading Civil War as a standalone event, and I think almost everyone who was doing the same would agree with me that it was subpar.

Some notes about issue 7:

+ Captain America being tackled by ordinary citizens and realizing what he was doing was hurting the people he was trying to protect was a poignant moment, if for no other reason than the fact that I wanted to use the word poignant.

+ Oh shit, Spiderman in his black costume leading the underground movement?! I might have to pick up a couple of issues just to see what Spidey does.

+ Hercules picked up Mjolnir and bashed in robot Thor’s head. It reminded me of the seal hunt coming up in Canada where people club baby seals.

+ Amazing. Spectacular.

+ What exactly did Sue do to Taskmaster (I think it was Taskmaster…) after he shot Richards?

+ Tony Stark as the director of SHIELD? Things are going to get crazy in the Marvel Universe. It’s a shame I don’t read as much as I used to, because this has the potential to be very very interesting.
