What the hell is a mimiga? And what is up with all of the Curly Brace fan art?

I know it has been out forever, but I finally got around to playing Cave Story, or Dōkutsu Monogatari for the Japanesu. It seems that everyone who has played Cave Story loves it, and I now know why. Cave Story is probably one of the best video games that I have ever played. Serious. From wikipedia:

Cave Story (洞窟物語, Dōkutsu Monogatari?) is a freeware PC game designed and created by Daisuke Amaya, art-name Pixel. The game is a traditional action-adventure game, reminiscent of the Castlevania and Metroid games. After being fan-translated to English by Aeon Genesis, the game has received praise from gamers worldwide.

While I don’t know much about Pixel’s pitching abilities, I do have to say that he is an extremely talented game maker. It’s crazy if you think about it; one guy creating a game that probably is better than 99% of the garbage out there. I can’t think of one thing that I didn’t like about Cave Story because everything just fit together so perfectly. The wikipedia entry describes Cave Story as Metroid-esque, but I don’t know if I would describe it as such. The world layout is in the vein of Metroid, but the gameplay reminds me a lot of Gunstar Heroes.

Cave Story’s simple plot avoids a lot of video game cliches. It probably took me around 6 hours to beat Cave Story, which is really impressive considering there is little filler in Cave Story. (You won’t be spending hours fighting bats to collect experience points or cards or whatever.) Most people will probably be able to breeze through this game, but I had a hard time beating Cave Story. (I really suck at video games.) Some of the bosses are pretty ridiculous and I probably spent a good 2 hours trying to beat the end boss.

There isn’t much else for me to say except every video game fan should try Cave Story. It’s free, so why not?
