BCS Bowl Predictions 2008
Despite the fact that I have lost thousands of dollars gambling on football games and countless man hours “studying” lines, there’s something about the allure of putting a little action on games that I can’t resist. Like a moth to a flame, or Christ Stokes and Marques Houston to little boys, I know that no good can come out of my fascination…
Long time readers of popho and its previous incarnations know I do picks for every BCS bowl. The majority of the time I am wrong, so if you follow any of my advice you will lose money. In fact, it would probably be for the best if you didn’t bet at all. Serious. If it weren’t for some lucky parlays saving my ass over the past few years I am sure I would have had at least a kneecap broken by some shady underworld characters.
Before I move on to my picks, I do have to say that this past year in college football has been absolutely insane. But I don’t need to tell you guys that. On to my picks…
vs.
As much as I would have loved to have seen a Georgia/USC matchup, this Rose Bowl matchup isn’t bad either. I think Illinois is severely underrated and will play USC tight. However I don’t know if Illinois will get the W, but I have a feeling Juicy will be able to keep up with Booty (hee hee). This one will probably come back and bite me in the ass, but I’m going Illinois (+13.5).
vs.
I’ll admit, one of those SEC-biased people who’s always going on and on about “SEC speed OMG!” and how it is the best conference in the country yaddi-yaddi-ya. I don’t think Hawaii has played a team as quick on both sides of the ball as Georgia and expect this one to be a blowout. Georgia (-7.5)
vs.
If West Virginia manages to win after the Backyard Brawl debacle and Rodriguez jumping ship… it’ll say a lot about this team. Unfortunately I don’t see that happening, especially with the Sooners being red hot. Oklahoma (-7.5)
vs.
Out of all the BCS games, this is probably the hardest one for me to pick. (Probably because it lacks “punch” compared to the others…) On one side, you have Kansas, who has the fattest coach in the history of sports, and on the other side, you have Virginia Tech, who, honestly aren’t as good as they were in past years. When in doubt, I always go with the favorite. Virginia Tech (-3.5)
vs.
Another really hard game to pick, especially with the crazy line of 4. (I hate it when the books come out with weird numbers like 4, 9, 15, and so forth.) You have an Ohio State team that isn’t as good as the one who lost to Florida last year, and you have LSU, who nearly blew the chance to play for the for the BCS title not once, but twice. I still like LSU (remember, I’m very SEC-centric… which could be one of the reasons why I am never able to pick the winners…), but think it will be an extremely close game with the winner scoring on their final drive. LSU (-4)
