Ayumi Hamasaki has been one of those Asian artists that I always wanted to write about but never did. It’s not that I dislike Ayu, because I actually dig her music and music videos. She has her own sense of style; something that’s rare in the Asian pop world. (Seriously, 99% of Asian music acts emulate other Asian music acts who, in turn, emulate other Asian music acts and so on…)

Today’s video review is of Ayumi Hamasaki’s latest video, Marionette. For some reason, I really like videos about dolls. Not because I still play with them or because I own a bunch of Bratz… that would just be plain weird… Nope, I prefer videos about dolls because they’re usually pretty fucked up. Let’s hope Marionette is as well…

0:11 - The intro reminds me of Christmas…

0:26 - This is pretty neat. Ayumi and some dudes in tuxedos are rigged up like marionettes. At least the video fits the title. You guys have no idea how disappointed I was when I watched Sweet Impact and there was no sweet impact.

0:37 - This guy isn’t disturbing at all.

0:40 - Fuck that white iris shit. It’s freaking me out.

0:45 - Are they on a carousel?

1:07 - So far nothing is happening and Ayumi is just singing in a real low voice. Maybe this wasn’t the best video to review…

1:12 - Okay the music’s picking up…

1:20 - I wish I understood Japanese. Maybe this video would make more sense.

By the way, I had two years of Japanese language classes and the only Japanese word I know is onara.

1:30 - Now we have Ayumi asleep. Fun.

1:45 - Lightning strikes, and Ayumi’s on tv. Fun. I can tell something big is about to happen…

1:50 - Or not.

2:17 - Fuck this is the most boring video ever. I can’t believe it’s FIVE MINUTES LONG, which is like an eternity for a music video.

3:03 - Oh hey Ayumi decides to wake up and notices the little merry-go-round with the marionettes.

3:35 - Yes! The marioneetes break free of their strands and start dancing.

3:36 - I just thought about the NSync video for Bye Bye Bye and it’s a million times better than Marionette AND it has Kim Smith. Never thought I’d say that I’d enjoy an NSync video more than… uh… anything else.

4:36 - Big Ayumi opens the door and leaves…

4:54 - Nothing happens.

Verdict: As if you couldn’t already tell, I am really really disappointed by this video. Seriously, there was so much potential and it even looks cool… but the song and video were booooooooring. Unless you’re a hardcore Ayumi fan, I’d say skip it.
